The War Memorial
February 1917 A meeting
to talk about erecting a war memorial.
March 1919 Parish meeting
agreed that the memorial should be for Chesham Bois only and not linked with
Amersham Common. Discussions on whether there should also be a memorial
hall. Both were agreed, but funds would be subscribed separately. The
obelisk would be erected on the common. A committee of 12 was established.
August
1919 Meeting agreed that £10 credit balance from peace celebrations
should go to war memorial fund.
It appears that the council also
agreed that a water fountain should be erected near the war memorial. No
details given on war memorial erection or dedication.
December 1920
to March 1921 Discussions with water company about supply and who should
pay. A charge of 10/- a quarter agreed with the amount to be recovered from
the Rural District Council via the precept.
April 1922 Water
turned on.
July 1924 Council takes over
care of water fountain.
June 1947 Letter to all parishioners
asking for suggestions and contributions for new memorial.
October
1948 Parish meeting agreed to proceed with:
renovation of memorial and inclusion of names of fallen in WW2
lay crazy paving surround
removal of drinking fountain to more suitable site.
June 1949 Meeting to discuss new war memorial fountain. Specification
agreed to include the words 'Parish of Chesham Bois 1949'. The cost was
settled at £47 and a sculptor Mr Corden of Palmers Green, London was
commissioned to carry out work.
November 1949 Rededication of war
memorial with 19 names added by W T Robinson of Chesham at a cost of £8 12/6
Jul-Nov 1953 Concern about subsidence of war memorial. Inspected by
Amersham RDC surveyors. The water fountain was damaged and out of action.
Water supply disconnected and fountain moved from common.
The water
fountain commissioned in 1949 is now in the burial ground
March 1957
W T Robinson re-appointed with approximately 900 letters on war memorial at
a cost of £16.
