Village Fete 2008
Our Village Fete this year was opened by Elvis impersonator Mark Dobbs who
also kept people entertained with a series of shows throughout the
afternoon. Mark was joined in the arena by dancers from the Yvonne Taylor
School of Dancing who jived and danced to the songs made famous by Elvis.
The afternoon’s events were presided over by Town Cryer, Simon Card who
acted in the capacity of Master of Ceremonies.
Another special attraction was a low level flypast by a Hurricane aircraft
from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to a commentary by Geoff Nichols,
CBE, DFC a former Hurricane pilot who regaled everyone with some of his
flying experiences. An unexpected bonus was a low level fly past by more
than 50 aircraft including a Nimrod, C17 Cargo Plane and close formations of
Tornadoes and Typhoons that had taken part in the Trooping of the Colour
Ceremony in London and had been given the location of the fete by the
Hurricane pilot. They diverted over Chesham Bois Common en route for RAF
Halton where they were due to take part in a flying display.
Apart from Elvis the arena also featured a display by Dogs4us of obedience
and dancing to music and the Amersham Music Centre Sax Quartet who also
provided some musical entertainment. There was a separate arena area for
children who were kept entertained by a series of different shows including
a Magic show and Punch & Judy by Oscar the Clown. They were also able to
work off any excess energy on a nearby inflatable slide and bouncy castle.
Our thanks go to all the local interest groups and organisations that
supported the fete by running stalls, participating and generally helping
make the afternoon fun for all. The general consensus is that the afternoon
was a great success no doubt aided by some lovely fine weather.

Annual Parish Meeting
Our guest speaker this year was John Morris,
Director of the Chiltern Woodlands Project a registered charity that was
set up by the Chiltern Society in 1989 who gave a talk entitled ‘IF YOU
GO DOWN TO THE WOODS TODAY’, a brief history of woodland in The
Chilterns.

Beat the Bounds
The Council had led the annual ‘Beat the Bounds’ walk following the
Parish boundary on the Sunday prior to the meeting and this had been
enjoyed by those attending. It was particularly pleasing en route to see
how the landscaping of the woodland burial ground has progressed.

Remembrance Day 2007
A Veteran’s Parade followed by a Service of
Remembrance at the War Memorial was held on Sunday 11th November.

Mrs Janet Kirchheimer, Chairman, Chesham
Bois Parish Council introduced the service and the prayers were led by The
Reverend Huw Davies. Amongst the organisations taking part were The Royal
British Legion Amersham & district Branch, RB Legion Women’s Section & the
RB Legion Club, St Leonard’s Church, Chesham All Girls Band, the RAF
Association, Rotary International, Amersham Police, St John Ambulance,
Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Bucks County Council, Chiltern District Council,
Amersham Town Council and Chesham Bois Parish Council.

Autumn 2007 Common & Village Clear Up

Residents of Chesham Bois together with local Brownies, Cubs, Guides and
Scouts met at the village War Memorial before setting off on the autumn
village and common clear up.
Extension of the Burial Ground - Woodland Burials
In June 2004 the Parish Council completed the purchase of some 10 acres of
land between Great Bois Wood and the existing Burial Ground off Bois Moor
Road, which it had been offered earlier in the year.
The acquisition will provide the Parish Council with a unique opportunity to
extend the existing Burial Ground to almost double its present size.
The purchase was funded out of capital reserves and hence is not a charge on
the Council Tax Payer; grants will be sought for the development of the
Woodland Burial area.

Since the Council purchased the field next to the
cemetery in 2004 a lot of planting has been carried out by volunteers in
preparation for its future use. An area which mirrors the existing burial
ground has been set aside and defined by a line of new hedging to allow for
future expansion of the current formal facility. To the south of this, a
number of tree saplings have been planted to create future glades in the
area designated for Woodland Burials. This facility together with a possible
pets’ cemetery, are quite rare in this part of the country. Planning consent
has been obtained to
permit the planned burials on the land.
The remainder of the land is for the moment to be
set aside with free access to the community.
Log Seat

This log seat was made from the wood of the Punch
Tree, which used to stand in South Road near the junction with Sycamore
Road. It was condemned as unsafe and taken down by the County Council.
Thanks to Amersham Town Council, 2 benches have been created from it. This
one stands on the common, near the Old Rectory. Because of the long
association between the Punch Tree and the Scouts, the other seat has been
given to them and stands outside the Pioneer Hall. In the past every new cub
was enrolled under the tree.
Jubilee Oak Tree
On the 18th March 2003 Robin Reid, one of our senior residents, planted on behalf of the Parish Council an oak tree to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. The oak is situated on the south side of the cricket ground, on the common, where there are a number of oaks celebrating various royal events of the past.
Robin Reid remembers that just before his 11th birthday he watched another oak being planted to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V.
He was delighted to plant our oak in honour of our gracious Queen and he also thanked the Council for their dedicated care of the village common.

Robin Reid sadly died peacefully at Stoke
Mandeville Hospital on Wednesday 28th November 2007.
